2011 SIFF

Growing up, one of my favorite cartoons to watch on a Saturday morning was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’m sure that probably seems odd but let me explain as to why.

It wasn’t about the cool karate tricks, or the mutant turtles but my interest was gauged by my admiration for Ms. April O’Neil. April, who (as everyone knows) was friendly with the turtles, assisted them with solving mysteries, as well as a successful fearless journalist. My idol. 🙂

Now, what I most respect about what she stood for was the love for her job, she was constantly at the center of it all, no matter what. Hence, my new project (minus being kidnapped by any of “Shredder’s” goons, haha).

June 8th, 2011 (this Wednesday) is the opening night for the Staten Island Film Festival – with free admission to many of their films – I plan to attend as many as possible.

Opening night will be hosted at Staten Island’s St. George Theatre. The film featured for this evening is titled Sing Your Song – A Film About the Life of Harry Belafonte, directed by Susanne Rostock. So, why would or should a person want to see this???? Apparently, Belafonte was a popular calypso singer, who not only experienced and over came the difficulty of fame amongst Caucasian and Black-American fans during the Civil Rights Movement but was also an advocate for equality and worked along-side Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. along with many others.

For a quick synopsis, see the following clip of Rostock (the director) reflect on the film and Harry Belafonte.

Stream Only?

Growing up I have the faint memory of renting VHS movies from Blockbuster. The slogan, “Be Kind, Please Rewind” is still engraved in my mind. But Blockbuster had its inconveniences and was inevitably forced out of business by the newbie, Netflix. For a small fee, I could rent DVDs, hold them for lengths at a time and never have to leave my house! Instead of having to go into a store front, return and re-rent a movie, I could simply reserve movies online and have them mailed to my house at my leisure. To make it even better, Netflix then stepped it up a notch and provided (those who paid for the additional service) an “Instant Watch” service where I could stream the movie through the Play Station console and watch (old) movies for free, instantaneously!

The “Instant Watch” service is great for those in between days when I’m waiting on a movie in the mail and there’s nothing to watch on television. The only set-back from the service is the majority of the films that are “Instant” are old. However, I’m a fan of the classics and so this doesn’t bother me too much. Aside from movies, television shows as well are offered via “Instant” viewing.

But perhaps Netflix’s current idea has taken it too far. This week, Netflix has announced on their blog that over the next 2 years they will be phasing out the distribution of DVDs and will turn into “Stream Only”, which, in my mind seems like it could alienate many of their customers. Within days of this announcement, members have taken to Netflix’s website and have left numerous complaints in regards to this change. Hopefully the company will take the time to hear their customer’s concerns and re-think this.

From my experience with “Instant Watch”, there are instances when the stream would falter and the movie would stop due to a lost connection. If thousands of users are attempting to stream the same film, can this really work? I assume this is a problem that Netflix will have to address. Time will tell if this indeed is a smart move for the innovative company or not.

Countdown to Zero

On Today’s episode of The View, the ladies on the panel interviewed ex-C.I.A. agent, Valeria Plame Wilson about her life as an agent and her current involvement with a documentary titled, Countdown to Zero.

Wilson, a vivacious blonde, had a successful career with the agency for nearly 20 years. According to the New York Times,  Wilson was outed in 2003 as an undercover by a columnist, Robert Novak (who is currently deceased) in retaliation of her husband, Joseph Wilson, an ambassador who criticized the Bush administration.  In an article titled “Private Spy and Public Spouse Live at Center of Leak” – Scott Shane wrote:

Mr. Wilson, 55, interpreted the leak of his wife’s C.I.A. connection as an act of vengeance from White House officials for his public accusations of deceit in building a case for the Iraq war. Days before the leak, he had gone public in a New York Times Op-Ed article and television appearances to charge that the administration had covered up his own debunking of reports that Iraq had bought uranium in Africa. What he calls a “smear campaign” against the couple has catalyzed his transformation from nonpartisan diplomat – he worked closely with the first President Bush and his top aides during the first gulf war – to anti-Bush activist.”

Now, in an effort to promote awareness, Valerie Wilson along with several other politicians have participated in a ground breaking documentary that discusses the dangers of nuclear weapons. Directed by Lucy Walker, the documentary discusses the issue of disarmament. Produced by Lawrence Bender, who is notorious for Al Gore’s successful documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, apparently had been searching for the next big topic of discussion. A recently published article titled Its Time To Start Worrying Again, Dennis Lim wrote about the film’s objectives and the involvement with the current Obama administration.

Nuclear disarmament has been a central policy plank for President Obama. This year alone he has held an international nuclear summit meeting in Washington and signed a New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia (now pending ratification by the Senate). With the release of “Countdown to Zero,” Mr. Bender said, “we’re hoping this issue rises to the top of the political agenda.” He acknowledged that some have criticized the goal of global zero as naïve or unsafe, but he said, “there’s a big intersection between the camps” advocating for abolition and merely for reduction.”

The following film is scheduled to open in New York City Friday, July 23rd, 2010. For additional information on screenings in other cities, please visit their website at Magnolia Pictures
